Waking Dream
Illusion 3 (mysteries)
Casting Time: 1 round
Range: 150 ft., 30 ft. radius
Duration: concentration
Components: S, M (handful of silt or dust)
The arcanist produces a visual illusion that is silent, difficult to describe in detail, difficult to recall, and even more difficult to act against. Creatures that interact with the illusion believe it to be real, but their minds justify their failure to affect the illusion just as if they were in a waking dream. Like a dream, something must happen for the creature to be able to snap out of it. Then, doubting creatures can make a Wisdom saving throw against the effect. On a success, new interactions with the dream dissipate its parts: phantasmal soldiers die or become dust upon being hit, etc. Taking an action to help an ally who hasn’t yet succeeded on the save imparts advantage, whereas a creature caught alone in the waking dream has disadvantage. Most magic-users do not include depictions of magic in the illusion, since a riddle or paradox can easily dispel the whole effect. The material component is a handful of fine silt or dust.
At Higher Levels. At 4th level, the illusion can have a 60’ radius. Cast at the 5th level, the illusion is permanent and does not require concentration, though it can still collapse due to a riddle or paradox.
